The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on Friday confirmed the Al-Shabaab had attacked one of its camps in Bulo Marer, but without disclosing the number of casualties.
ATMIS tweeted just after 10am: “This morning, ATMIS FOB in Bulo Marer came under Al-Shabaab attack. ATMIS forces are currently assessing the security situation. More information will be issued later.”
Ugandan defence spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kukayigye told New Vision they were probing the reported attack on a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) camp in Somalia and that they were waiting for details from ATMIS.
“We are probing an attack on one of our camps by foreign insurgents. We will issue a detailed statement on the mater after cross-checking with ATMIS,” said Kulayigye.
On Friday, the Al-Shabaab in a statement claimed that their Mujahideen fighters had “carried out a dawn raid” on an ATMIS Uganda base in the Lower Shabelle region.
They claimed they had killed “137 crusaders, destroyed and seized military vehicles and captured cache of weapons and ammunition” after allegedly over runing the base.
ATMIS, however, could not immediately confirm the reports by the Al-Shabaab.
