Bugema University is the football champion of the East Africa University games after defeating Islamic University in Uganda- IUIU 1-0 at the Arena Visions stadium in Ndejje.
A single second-half goal by Swaalaf Sebbale when he tapped in a corner by Denis Kumuli was enough to help Bugema University overcome a more resilient side in IUIU, which had a mixture of players from both the Mbale Main and Kampala campuses.
Isaac Ssenyonjo from Bugema University told URN that despite coming as underdogs in the tournament, his teammates gave it their best, which saw them defeat some of the heavyweights including Uganda Martyrs University and Kampala University.
Ssenyonjo applauded Bugema’s University’s defenders for their hard work throughout their final game despite repeated threats from IUIU strikers that bullied them with aerial balls.
Meddie Nyanzi, the head coach of Bugema University, said their victory was delayed because his team has been performing well in the previous tournaments, and such a triumph comes because of the team’s persistence.
Bugema University becomes the second champion of football after Uganda Christian University-UCU became the champions of Women’s football Tuesday when they defeated Kampala University 1-0 in the finals.
